Cody and the east entrance — the park without Jackson’s prices or its crowds.

Yellowstone has five entrances. Four of them get most of the traffic and most of the lodging markup. The east entrance, out of Cody, gets neither — which is the whole pitch.
Cody is a real town first, tourist base second: the Buffalo Bill Center of the West (five museums under one roof), a nightly summer rodeo running since 1938, and a 52-mile drive into Yellowstone through Shoshone National Forest that’s a destination in its own right. Lodging runs meaningfully cheaper than Jackson or West Yellowstone for a comparable distance to the park.
Practical note: the Cody–East Entrance road (US-14/16/20) closes seasonally with the park’s east gate, typically early May through early November — check current National Park Service dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
