The complete Wyoming road trip
A 10–14 day loop connecting every region on this site — plus the 5–7 day version if that’s all you’ve got.
Wyoming is roughly the size of the United Kingdom with about a hundredth of the population, which means the honest answer to “can I see it all in one trip” is no — but a well-built loop can cover more ground than most people assume, because the highways are empty and the speed limits are generous.
The route · 10–14 days, full loop
Start in the Bighorns (Sheridan)
2–3 nights. Settle in, day-trip into Bighorn National Forest, sort gear before the drive gets longer.
Sheridan → Cody (~2 hrs)
1–2 nights. Buffalo Bill Center of the West, the nightly rodeo in summer.
Cody → Yellowstone → Jackson Hole
3–4 nights — the trip’s centerpiece and most expensive stretch. Book this lodging first; everything else flexes around it.
Jackson → Lander (~2.5 hrs, over Togwotee Pass)
1–2 nights in the Wind River area for a quieter, cheaper contrast to Jackson.
Lander → Casper (~2.5 hrs)
1 night — more a waypoint than a destination unless you want a full day for the trail history.
Casper → Cheyenne (~2.5 hrs)
1–2 nights, especially worth extending if it lines up with Frontier Days in July.
Cheyenne back to Sheridan via Devils Tower (~4.5 hrs with the detour)
Closes the loop, with the Tower as a last stop before heading home.
If you only have 5–7 days
Cut the loop in half: Bighorns → Cody → Yellowstone → Jackson, then fly out of Jackson Hole Airport instead of driving back (or reverse it). This is the highest-density version of the trip — mountains and the park, without the two long eastern legs.
What to skip if you're short on time
Devils Tower and the Wind River detour are the first things to cut — both are genuinely worth a dedicated trip on their own, and neither is essential to a first-time Wyoming loop built around Yellowstone and the Bighorns.
Where to actually book
For the Bighorns leg, book direct with Wyo Stays — no platform service fee, and a local team who’ll answer the phone. For every other leg, use whatever platform you’re already comfortable with; we don’t have inventory in those markets and won’t pretend otherwise.
