If Cheyenne is Wyoming’s political center, Casper is closer to its actual one — geographically central, historically the crossroads for the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express trails, all documented at the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center nearby.
Casper’s pitch isn’t a single landmark; it’s location. Central Wyoming’s oil-and-energy history is visible around town, Casper Mountain is a short drive from downtown for hiking and, in winter, skiing, and the North Platte River runs straight through the middle of the city — trout water inside city limits.
Best for: a base for exploring central Wyoming without committing to a single-destination trip, or a stopover between the Bighorns and southern Wyoming.
