Cheyenne
The state capital, and a genuinely underrated one-to-two night stop.

Cheyenne is what most Wyoming road trips drive past on I-25 or I-80 without stopping, which is a mistake for anyone with a spare day. It’s the state capital, its largest city, and the site of Cheyenne Frontier Days every July — billed as the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and western celebration, ten days of rodeo, concerts, and a genuinely enormous parade.
Outside Frontier Days, Cheyenne is a comfortable, low-key stop: the restored 1886 State Capitol, the Cheyenne Depot Museum in the old Union Pacific station, and a walkable downtown with more going on than the drive-by reputation suggests. It’s also 100 miles from Denver — a realistic add-on to a Colorado trip, not a destination requiring its own flight.
Best for: a one-to-two night stop on a longer drive, or a Frontier Days trip booked well ahead — the town’s lodging fills early for it.
